On May 7, 2019, at the age of 87, Helmut, beloved husband, father, Opa, uncle, brother, friend and mentor began his next journey into the arms of our Lord and his next great adventure. After a short illness, Helmut passed away with Ellen, the love of his life by his side. We are grateful that we had the past few weeks with Helmut to share our gratitude and love with an extraordinary man. Helmut appreciated the visits from family and friends, during this time, sharing in laughter, tears, words of wisdom and love.
Born on September 20, 1931 in Durmersheim, Germany. At the age of 20 Helmut came to Canada. It was in Saskatoon where he met Ellen, they married in 1955 and a few years later moved to Vancouver to start a family. A true Renaissance man, Helmut had many interests: traveling the world, hunting, fishing, boating, gardening (especially growing tomatoes), and cooking. He had a creative entrepreneurial spirit, curious mind, and strong work ethic. A friend in times of need, the door was always open at Mom and Dad’s home.
He is survived by his wife Ellen, his daughters and their husbands who were like sons to him; Susan (John), Brenda (Peter), his grandchildren who were the greatest joy in his life Kristina (Rob), Kelsey (Scott), Dexter and Alexandra. Sister Inge, niece Jutta (Rainer), family and friends here and in Germany.
Helmut lived a rich life and his wealth came from his family and friends. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday May 22, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Augustine’s Church, 2028 W. 7th Ave., Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Covenant House Vancouver, an organization close to Helmut’s heart.
