Our beloved mother and grandmother passed away at age 91 on June 26, 2016 in Richmond, B.C. “Honey” was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1924. She was the third of four children of Hazel and Stanley McCuaig, Q.C. and a grandchild of Mattie and Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the first Premier of Alberta. Helen loved her family and heritage.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Frank in 1997 and is survived by her four children and their families: Mark (Chris), Anne, Sheila (Sid, Connor, Kieran and Bridget Moon), Brian (Casi, Hana, Arden and Callum).
Honey was predeceased by her parents, Hazel and Stanley; sister, Ruth Bate; brothers, Harwood McCuaig and Eric McCuaig, Q.C. She is survived by in-laws, Ed and Jean Bate, Ed Klippstein; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Associations that were special to Helen included the University of Alberta Alumni, St. Augustine’s C.W.L., Pi Beta Phi Fraternity and the Woodward’s Gang. She kept in very good touch with her friends from Garneau Elementary School and met with them yearly. Honey was generous and kind-hearted. She was a great baker, lover of crosswords, avid reader and never turned down a game of bridge. She was always interested in the lives of others and created a home where all were welcome. Helen loved her children, their spouses and grandchildren. She will be remembered as a remarkably loving and generous mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.
Thanks to Courtyard Gardens and Gilmore Gardens for the tender care and compassion they showed towards Mom over the past few years.
