It is with great sadness and enduring love that we announce the passing of Günter Neugebauer on July 14, 2016 at the age of 76. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 35 years Cathy (née Halstead) and their son Eric (Christa) of Vancouver, and his sister Doris (Werner) Püttman and their daughter Tina (Frank) Michael and her family from Germany. Günter was born in Machenau, Germany in 1940. After various relocations in the post-war period, he and his family settled in Iserlohn, West Germany, where he trained to be an electronics technician. His career focused on repair of video equipment for various companies, concluding with CBC in Vancouver.
Günter’s lifelong passion, however, was amateur radio, with which he became fascinated as a young man. In Germany he operated as DJ4EZ and after he moved to British Columbia in the 1970’s, he took the call sign VE7CLD. Throughout his 60 years operating, his interests evolved from SSB to amateur TV, satellite communication and ultimately EME (moon-bounce). His proudest accomplishments included being among the first in the world to complete EME QSOs on 24 GHz and receive an EME signal on 47 GHz. He loved to share his experience with others and promote the hobby through presentations on satellite and EME communications, participation on the RAC microwave committee, and support of emergency response planning with VECTOR.
Above all, Günter was a loving and supportive husband, father, and brother who will live on through our most cherished memories.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to Radio Amateurs of Canada rac.ca/donation, VECTOR vectorradio.ca/donate or the Red Cross Aids to Independent Living www.redcross.ca/how-we-help/community-health-services-in-canada/bc-aids-to-independent-living-program.
