Grace Gallacher Gaylie (Tobin) born in Glasgow, Scotland October 14 1924 passed peacefully on September 10 2014. Daughter of William Tobin and Anne Rodgers, mother of nine children, Grace truly and generously blessed all those she met. With her strong Irish roots, unshakeable faith, and Glaswegian humour (present to the end), Grace was always serving others, and was there for all, in times of both joy and sorrow. In later years, through the illness of dementia, she brought the sacred gifts of presence and truth to all who encountered her. To her family she was a mother, a friend, a Joan of Arc. Grace was a strong Celtic woman to her last breath. At age fourteen, Grace started working in munitions factories in Glasgow, then worked in Woolworth's Department stores in Glasgow and London.  While on duty at Woolworth's on Oxford Street, she met Steve, a Canadian soldier, himself an immigrant to Canada. Love and a sense of adventure brought Grace to Canada, to Vancouver, where she raised nine children. Grace loved being a mother to her children and to the poor and homeless whom she served through the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement and other Vancouver charities. Grace is predeceased by her beloved husband Steve, by her parents William and Annie, by brothers Willie, Tom, Sam, and sister Lou. Grace leaves her beloved children: Bill, Rae, Steve, Diane, Donna, Michael, Paul, Monica and Veronica. Grace also leaves twenty-one beloved grandchildren, who will always remember granny for her love, generosity, and just-right sandwiches. Grace also leaves sons and daughters in-law, great-grandchildren, and many others who were deeply touched by her kindness, friendship and faith.  We extend our deep gratitude to Grace's caring and expert care staff at Yaletown House in Vancouver, especially to her team of nurses and care aids on the third floor. With deep gratitude also to Father Paul Smith OFM at Immaculate Conception Church in Dunbar, who brought light as Grace courageously faced illness. Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound. Our mother’s spirit will live forever in our hearts and heaven.
