George was born in Winnipeg and moved to Vancouver in 1930, settling in the Dunbar neighbourhood with his large close-knit family. Predeceased by his loving wife, Elaine, in 2015. Grieving his loss are son David (Mary Irvine) and daughters Patricia (Vincent Oliveri) and Suzanne (Paul Lancaster). His three grandchildren Tamara (Macvey), and Isabella and Dominic (Oliveri) brought him much joy. The recent birth of two great grandsons, Salvatore Oliveri (Isabella) and Gregory (Tamara and Joe O’Brien), was a gift. George attended St Augustine’s school and Vancouver College. He enlisted in the RCAF and earned his pilot’s wings in 1944. He graduated with a Commerce degree from UBC in 1949. His genuine interest in people made him successful in his careers in Human Resources and Real Estate. He loved reading and had a keen interest in aviation and WW2 history. His full and vital life was a healthy mix of work and play. George and Elaine's marriage in 1951 was the beginning of a loving union enriched by family, friends and faith. They supported each other through all the joys and challenges of life. As a father his love and support was steadfast; he was gentle and kind in his counsel. The power of his integrity was instilled in his children and grandchildren. The fortunate family dogs were spoiled by his affection. An active man blessed with excellent health and a lifelong love of golf and exercise, at age 65 he joined a group of cycling seniors for a two month camping tour of Australia: his way of celebrating retirement! At 93 he was still at bat and rounding the bases at the annual family picnic. His many friends enjoyed his generous spirit, love of adventure, and sense of humour. He showed grace and courage facing advancing years. When it came time to accept help, George’s caregivers, Bhing and Rodith, enriched his life, kept him smiling and enabled him to remain at home until the end. As Bhing said, “He was a role model for young and old.” Their love and devotion helped him and our family immeasurably. All who knew George will remember his handsome face, his brilliant blue eyes, and his warm embrace. Donations in George’s memory can be made to Covenant House Vancouver.
