~ In Loving Memory ~

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Michael Arbeider of New Westminster, BC three days before his 65th birthday.

Gary was born at St. Paul’s Hospital on June 23, 1959 – the first child of Gerhard (Gerry) and Phyllis (nee Wensink) Arbeider. He grew up in SE Vancouver and graduated in 1977 from Killarney High School. He went on to graduate from UBC in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. He worked in Information Technology (IT) with different organizations but for the last 32 years of his career, worked as a Business Systems Analyst with the District of North Vancouver. He retired in March 2021 and shifted his focus and energy to his music.

He was an avid Scouter and moved through the organization from Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers to eventually become a Cub leader himself.

While at UBC, he joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and actively supported the fraternity for a number of years after graduation. Up to his passing, he continued to join alumni for gatherings throughout the year.

He married Margaret Anna Valeria Ross on August 6, 1988. They bought their home in New Westminster in March 1989 and shortly thereafter, they welcomed their two wonderful children, Sarah (May 1990) and Michael (February 1992) into this world.

Gary is survived by his father Gerry Arbeider, his wife, Margaret Ross, his daughter Sarah (Andrew Davignon), his grandson, Henry Joseph Davignon, his son, Michael (Sarah Pihowich), his sister Lynda (Victor Nishi) & niece Melody (Amrit Johal), great-nephew Asher, & nephew Eric Nishi. Pre-deceased by his mother (Phyllis nee Wensink) and his nephew Jeffrey Nishi (Tamera Miller).

Gary’s passion was music, and he was the rhythm guitar player for Blue Wagon. The original band was formed at a Tom Lee Weekend Warrior Course in 2010. The course was an opportunity for adults with some foundational skills and an interest in performing in a group, to come together to form a band and eventually rock out in front of a crowd. Gary and the lead singer (Zane), continued together for 14 years through many transformations and name changes(!) to prepare for their current gig as Blue Wagon at the Portside Pub on Tuesday Sept. 24th, 2024. All are invited.

Gary had posted several videos of the group’s performances, as well as a couple of his own videos, over the years on his YouTube page: @garbider

Thank you to all that attended Gary’s Celebration of Life Open House at our home on July 13, 2024, and his Inurnment at St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Westminster on July 15, 2024.
