Estelle passed away peacefully on Friday, June 19th, 2015 having just celebrated her 99th birthday. Predeceased by her loving husband, Allan William Crocker, she is survived by her loving daughter Joan (Hafeez), and grandsons Irfaan and Kaamran. A Kerrisdale pioneer, Estelle was amongst the first student body at Point Grey Secondary School in 1929 and built her own home on a $500 lot in 1945. Without a degree and formal education, she entered the workforce for the first time at the age of forty as a medical office assistant in Kerrisdale for Dr. Donald Farquhar, whom she worked with for 22 years. Setting aside her dream of becoming a nurse, she devoted her career to improving the working conditions for medical office assistants in British Columbia by joining the Medical Office Assistants Association of B.C. During this time she took pride in educating future medical office assistants in technical skills such as shorthand; mentoring and empowering women to have confidence in the workplace and, in particular, how to ask for a raise. As President of the Medical Office Assistants Association of B.C., Estelle attended an international convention in Washington, D.C., where she was received by the First Lady, Pat Nixon. Estelle proudly shared with the American contingent, and throughout her career, the comprehensive coverage B.C. Medical Plan members received for a moderate premium, often quoting the adage “health is wealth.” An avid tennis and badminton tournament player and a 40-year member of the Jericho Tennis Club, Estelle was a role model to those close to her, well recognized in the community and never short of the Irish charm. In loving memory. Condolences may be left for the family at www.kearneyfs.com.
