Passing peacefully at 83, Frances was the youngest of three girls born in Shanghai to Captain Tony Alexander Thomson Begg and Alys Maude Begg. Her father, serving with the British Army as a Captain in WW1, and a Major in WW2, had to send his wife and children back to Cambridge England in 1939. Frances studied and excelled at drama, singing, dance and photography, earning a Degree in Education at Cambridge University and playing the lead role of ‘Kate’ in their production of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”. In 1964 Frances put her teaching and acting careers on hold, immigrating to Canada with husband Roy and their two young sons. They settled in West Point Grey in 1965 and had two more children, after which Frances dedicated her life to her family. Active in local community groups and activities, Frances also built a successful dog breeding business, “Bellecarrie Registered Golden Retrievers”, with several puppies modeling in an Eaton’s catalogue! Frances was the Seniors Coordinator at Kerrisdale Community Centre until retiring in 1995, after which she lived in Port Moody before moving to the North Shore to live with two of her sons, and grandchildren. She thoroughly enjoyed the local Margaret Fulton Seniors Centre and, until her recent hospitalization, was a star creative writer and reigning scrabble champion there. Pre-deceased by former husband Roy in 2003, Frances is survived by four children, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sister Ann Foot (formerly Lamborn) in Cambridge and sister-in-law Margaret Bendall (Terry) in Yorkshire. Frances had a wonderful sense of humour and was intuitive, kind, sensitive, keenly intelligent, charming, persistent (dare we say stubborn?) and extremely brave. Likely the most utterly unselfish person we have ever known, Frances will be sorely missed by all who had the good fortune to know her. Thanks to Dr. John Adair, RN Karyn Lewis and the staff of the Margaret Fulton Seniors Centre for their friendship, consistently fine care and steadfast support of Frances over the past decade. Our mother did not want a formal funeral; however donations specifically to the Margaret Fulton Seniors Centre will be most gratefully received.
