On August 15, with her only child, daughter Fiorella Heywood by her side, Elide’s guardian angel lifted her soul to heaven.  She will be lovingly remembered by her devoted daughter, most cherished grandson, John Carlo(Rebecca) and adored great grandson John Elliot, and all other family members residing in Italy:  sisters Liliana and Leda, brother-in-law Sergio (Miranda), nieces Antonella, Evi, Ariela (Cesare), nephew Fabio, great-nephew Filippo, great-nieces Alina, Daria, Roberta and many others.

Elide was predeceased by her beloved husband Carlo of 59 years. Theirs was a beautiful union of kindred souls. In Italy, as children they shared the same school desks and as teenagers and young adults they withstood the ravages of World War II. In 1956, they immigrated to Canada and became its productive members and subsequently proud Canadian citizens. After working for many years for Bernard Casuals, Elide became manager of Maglio’s Catering and came in contact with a multitude of people – a Canadian tapestry of different nationalities. The many who knew Elide remember her for her most generous spirit, unfathomable kindness, charitable helping nature and prodigious mind.

She was for many years a Red Cross blood donor and a most prized member of the Club Femminile of the Italian Community Centre and recipient of its Year 2000 Mother of The Year Award. Hers was a truly amazing life – one of great momentous events and defeated obstacles. The family extends sincere thanks to the nurses, care attendants, activity and general staff of the German Canadian Care Home for their excellent, compassionate care and to Dr. Rosalie Pilapil-Lee, our endless gratitude for her indefatigable medical attention.

A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 25 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Parish, 5251 Joyce Street, Vancouver followed by entombment at Ocean View Burial Park South Mausoleum, North wing, interior wall, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby.

Reception will take place at 12:30 at the Italian Cultural Centre’s Trattoria, 3075 Slocan Street, Vancouver. Flowers are gratefully declined: however, donations in Elide’s memory may be directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the BC Cancer Foundation, the Canadian Red Cross or to Covenant House Vancouver.
