Edward Richard Soltis, who was always known as Ed, was born in St. Paul’s hospital, Vancouver, on November 14, 1937, the son of Helen and Frank Soltis. After graduation from Kitsilano High School, Ed attended UBC where he obtained a B.Ed degree. He decided to use his degree to see the world, and found teaching jobs in Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia. Tiring of the South Pacific, he moved to England and taught in London for two years, followed by a short time teaching in Israel. He also found time to study French in Nice and Spanish in Mexico. Returning to Vancouver, Ed taught for a short time in Richmond, but found his true home teaching English as a Second Language at Vancouver Community College, where he worked for 23 years. There are thousands of new Canadians in Vancouver who learned their English from Ed and he enjoyed interacting with them and learning about their culture, including having meals from around he world. He loved food, walking, languages, and meeting new people. Ed will be greatly missed by Pat, his companion of 49 years. Catholic Funeral Mass to be held at Guardian Angels on September 29th at 11am.
