Dr. Lorne Sullivan, a loving husband, father, grandfather and a distinguished figure in the field of Urologic Sciences passed away peacefully at Vancouver General Hospital on March 28, 2024. Lorne left behind a legacy that will be cherished by those whose lives he touched.
Lorne was born July 3, 1936 in Moss Bank, Saskatchewan. As a young man he was an excellent athlete and gifted pianist, graduating with honours from the Conservatory of Mus c of Toronto, solo performer. It was through his music he met his beloved wife Elaine, a fellow graduate of the Conservatory of Music. While pursuing a career as a concert pianist, he wished to fulfill a childhood dream of becoming a doctor. His dream was brought to fruition in 1962 graduating from the University of Saskatchewan, Faculty of Medicine.
Lorne furthered his medical journey with an internship at Vanderbilt University and completed his urological residency at the University of British Columbia (UBC). His thirst for knowledge further led him to pursue postgraduate training in Urological Oncology as a Royal College Traveling Fellow at various esteemed United States Cancer centres.
In 1971, Lorne established his practice in British Columbia. Over the years, he developed a highly acclaimed centre for the surgical management of Urological cancer at UBC. His dedication to the field of urology was not limited to clinical practice, he was also a revered teacher and clinician, responsible for shaping and training an entire generation of British Columbia urologists. He played a pivotal role in recruiting the team of clinicians and scientists to support the establishment of the Vancouver Prostate Centre and help shape a culture of team science with growth of many specialized programs within the Department of Urologic Sciences.
On a national and international scale, Dr. Sullivan's contributions were invaluable. He served as President of the Canadian Urological Association, the Northwest Urological Society, and the Western Section of the American Urological Association. He chaired the Specialty Committee in Urology and held the esteemed position of Chief Examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. From 1991 to 1999, he served as the Head of the Division of Urology at UBC, further solidifying his reputation as a leader in the field.
Among his numerous achievements, his visiting professorships to universities and hospitals throughout Canada, USA, Europe, and Asia as well as the Department of Surgery UBC - McKenzie Award for "Excellence in Clinical Teaching" were standouts to him, as he loved to teach. He was greatly honored to receive from his mentees and peers the naming of The Lorne D. Sullivan Annual Lectureship and Research Day at UBC.
Lorne and Elaine were united for a wonderful 65 years in marriage. After retirement, Lorne and Elaine travelled the world often seen playing golf in exotic locations, or at a grandchild's sports/ special event. They were inseparable partners and as a team, overcame any challenge they faced. Their children Jim, Kathleen and John were treasures to them, creating a home full of laughter, fun and love. Lorne and Elaine welcomed Monika, Mark and Heather as wonderful additions to their family as daughters and son-in-law. They were soon blessed with their precious grandchildren Patrick (Leyla); Michael (Shanley); Felicia (Andy); Joseph (Katia); Sarah and Cameron. Lorne was deeply and profoundly committed to his family and the love he shared with them will be a cherished memory and a lasting legacy.
Lorne's passing fills us with great sadness, however, we are comforted by his love of family and long life of tremendous accomplishments. He remains an inspiration to us all. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to The Sullivan Urology Foundation UBC.
