Dr. Gabriel Fernandez
June 17, 1932 – January 9, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Gabriel Fernandez on January 9th, 2019 in Vancouver, British Columbia. A loving husband, devoted father, and grandfather, Gabriel will be sadly missed by his wife Joanna, daughters Eli (husband Larry and daughters’ Sierra and Marina), Sonia (partner Rhonda), and Lisa (husband Dave). Forever loved by his surviving siblings, Teresa, Julita and Antonio, and many cousins, nieces and nephews, extended family in Spain and friends whose lives he touched.
Gabriel was predeceased by his parents, Maria and Antonio Fernandez and his three sisters, Maria-Jose, Emilita and Maria-Eugenia.
Gabriel was the first born of seven children in Tordesillas, Spain. He studied medicine in Valladolid, practiced in Madrid while completing his military service in Africa and then immigrated to Sudbury, Ontario in 1960 to continue as a family and emergency physician until his retirement in 1996. Gabriel developed a love for painting, fishing, hunting, and the great outdoors, dividing his time between Manitoulin Island and visiting family in Spain with his wife and children.
Shortly after retiring, Gabriel moved to Toronto In 1998, and thereafter to Vancouver in 2002.
He will be greatly missed by all.
After a private family ceremony and cremation, Gabriel’s ashes will be taken to Spain where he will be laid to rest with his parents and sisters. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimers Society or charity of your choice.
