It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Leroy Nelson, a man whose warmth, wisdom, and unwavering faith left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He was a devoted husband to Lorraine, a loving father to Brenda Phelan (Keith) and Corlynn O’Brien (Barry), and a cherished Poppa to Sydney and Aidan. He is also survived by his nephew Jimmy and his half-brother Josh. His family was his greatest pride, and his love for them was evident in everything he did. He passed peacefully on January 30th, 2025, the day after his 90th birthday after enduring a long six-year battle with serious health issues. He fought like a warrior to stay with us because he did not want to leave Mom.
Don was born in Edmonton, Alberta on January 29th, 1935 to Leroy Victor Nelson and Mary Elizabeth White. He is predeceased by his older brother Jim, his wife Rose and their son Darren. Some of his most cherished memories are of the times he spent helping his grandfather and grandmother, James and Lizzie White while they worked with the survey crew for the railroad in Alberta. He met the love of his life on a blind date and married in 1963. In 1966 he moved his family to B.C. where he would live for the rest of his life.
Don’s passion for his work in the glass industry was more than just a career—it was a calling. Highly respected and renowned, he poured his heart into his craft, earning admiration from colleagues and friends alike. Beyond his professional accomplishments, it was his kindness, his joy for life, and his ability to make everyone feel valued that truly defined him.
His faith was the foundation of his life, guiding him with strength and grace. A proud Catholic, he lived with deep conviction and gratitude, always finding fulfillment in the simple moments—whether it was a round of golf, a well-planned trip, or a gathering of family and friends. Don had a local spot for everything, from honey to perogies to ice cream, and he loved sharing those little joys with the important people in his life.
He was an even-tempered man, who found happiness in everyday life which involved his favourite black and white TV shows and movies, a good game of crib, scenic backroad drives, sitting outside watching the birds and enjoying Mom’s great cooking. He leaves a legacy of love, laughter, and unconditional kindness. Don was a great father, a great Poppa, a great friend, and a great man. His presence will be profoundly missed, but the love he shared will remain forever in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Doug and Fran MacDonald Langley Hospice or by calling 604-530-1115. This is where Don received the highest quality of compassionate palliative and hospice care in his final month.
A Catholic service will be held for Don in the spring and a date will be announced when it is chosen.
