Don passed away peacefully on Jun 19, 2023 in Burnaby, BC at the age of 90, he is predeceased by his wife, Myrtle Christine Dent (nee Smith).
Don was born in Bruno, SK and raised in Saskatoon by his mom, Caroline (Carrie) McDonald. Later in life Don discovered that his father was Samuel Hill. With this discovery he became fascinated with genealogy and learning more about his ancestry.
Don had many fond memories of his years growing up in Saskatoon, SK where he attended Westmount School and then Saskatoon Technical Collegiate. This led him to a career as an Aircraft Electrician in Edmonton, which provided him the opportunity to both repair and be assigned as technical crew for flights on many types of aircraft which he truly enjoyed.
Don was also a talented handyman and mechanic, he never hesitated to take on projects big and small. He helped regularly with the kids motorcycles and vehicle repairs. He was known for his creative woodworking and electrical projects around the home. If he could think it up, he could find a way to build it. Many have had the opportunity to sleep in one of his custom murphy-beds as he made several over the years. He was also commissioned regularly by Myrt for building quilting frames and quilt racks, etc. in support of her quilting projects and for installing the necessary electrical components such as lighting and switches for her other crafts (ceramic Christmas trees, lamps, sugar houses, etc.). His own craftworks included picture framing and stained glass works.
Don settled in St. Albert, AB where he and Myrt raised their 3 children, Rob, Todd and Sami. Once he retired from Transport Canada Don and Myrt moved to Cranbrook, BC which they both enjoyed immensely. Don’s final few years were spent in Burnaby which, with some family support, enabled him to continue to live out his life independently as was his goal.
Don is predeceased by his older sisters, Jean Benfield and Dorene Robinson, and his younger brother Ralph Dent.
He will be lovingly remembered by his sons Rob (Caroline) Dent and Todd Dent, and daughter Sami Dent (Angus Livingstone) and 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and a private family memorial will be held. If friends so desire memorial tributes may be made in honour of Don to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
