Diane M. E. Rae died suddenly in the afternoon of January 19, 2022. Diane was born on February 22, 1935, in Saskatoon, the daughter of Jim Darbey and Sheila Darbey (nee McClay). Diane grew up in Vancouver and attended Bayview and Lord Byng schools. She then enrolled in the nursing program at UBC and VGH graduating from VGH in 1956 and UBC in 1957. After graduation she worked as a public health nurse for the city of Vancouver. Later she was a volunteer nurse with Planned Parenthood and then a volunteer nurse with the Cancer Information line.
Diane loved bridge and stopped playing tennis at age 85. She also was fortunate that she was able to join her husband on trips to many of his overseas work sites and travelled extensively. After retirement she travelled even more. She went from the Mekong River to the Nile and from the Blue Mosque to Easter Island and from Auckland to Stalingrad and from Northern Sweden to Cape Town and Tierra del Fuego. She enjoyed jazz in New Orleans, ballet in New York and theatre in London.
She is survived by her husband John, her son Bruce, her daughter Susan (Jesse Paré) and her granddaughter Ella. She was loved by all and will be missed.
