Devon van der Meulen, 57, of Summerland, BC, peacefully passed away on October 26, 2024, surrounded by his wife and kids after a long, courageous battle with Fabry’s disease.

Born in Smithers, BC, to Gary and Dianne, Devon grew up on a dairy farm on Round Lake. He had fond memories of life on the farm, milking cows, throwing hay bales and canoeing on the lake. An avid athlete, he excelled in volleyball and basketball throughout high school and college. He competed in canoe and ski races and later pursued a passion for whitewater kayaking and mountain biking.

Devon married his high school sweetheart, Monica, in 1989, and together they raised four wonderful children. His unwavering commitment to his family was evident in everything he did; he would move mountains to help his children pursue their passions and education. Devon’s rock-steady presence and wicked sense of humor brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.

A passionate builder and handyman, Devon took great pride in renovating the multiple houses his family called home, always embarking on new projects around the house. He provided for his family no matter the challenge, ensuring they felt supported and loved. Devon worked for a number of engineering firms at the start of his career and spent the last seventeen years working for the District of Summerland.

Devon was predeceased by his mother Dianne and will be dearly missed by his wife, Monica; his children, Dara, Rylan (Chloe), Grace and Thea; his father, Gary; and his siblings, Derwin, Yvette (Brent), and Monique.

Thank you to all who cared for Devon in his final days, and to all who have sent their thoughts and prayers. If you would like, you can honor Devon by registering to be an organ donor or donating to the Canadian Fabry Association in his name.
