In loving memory of Denise Marie Cordelia Hogg, who passed away peacefully on May 13, 2024, at the age of 95.
She is survived by her loving family: her two children, Robert (Cari) and Karen; five grandchildren, Erin (Norbert), Sam (Jamie), Roo (Chiara), Lucy (Ryan), and Darwin; and two great-grandchildren, Fynn and Eleanor. She is predeceased by her parents, Aurore and Stephen; her four siblings, Phillip, Aimee, Clement, Marguerite, and her son David Bruce.
Denise was born on July 18, 1928, in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. She attended high school at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Edmonton, Alberta. She graduated from nursing in 1950 in Edmonton. She worked as a nurse in various parts of Canada including Alberta, British Columbia, and Quebec, as well as overseas in London, England.
She valued education and studied throughout her life. This culminated in her earning a degree at Simon Fraser University at the age of 80. She passed her love of learning onto her children and grandchildren.
Denise loved to travel and visited countries around the world, including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, France, Japan, England, Scotland, and others.
Denise valued community and loved to give back. In the later decades of her life, she volunteered her time throughout Vancouver. This included at what was then called the Women’s Resource Centre; a sandwich-making program in the West End; teaching English at the Carnegie Centre; and at a program teaching young mothers cooking skills.
She was extremely active and loved to walk, regularly walking the sea wall in the West End. In her late seventies, she walked part of the Camino de Santiago in Spain.
She loved her family dearly and treasured the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered as an amazing, caring, and generous mother and grandmother. She is still dearly loved and will be deeply missed.
Mass will be held at Guardian Angels Parish, 1161 Broughton St, Vancouver, on Tuesday, May 21 at 11 am.
The family would like to thank the staff at South Granville Park Lodge for their dedicated care. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre.
