Daniel passed away on March 17th, 2009 after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer. Dan was born in Winnipeg on May 13th, 1944 to Waldemar and Wanda Besel. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 38 years, Shiela (nee Hanson); his children Esther (Ted) and Lana (Patrick); and his two beloved grandchildren, Danica and Elyse. Dan is survived by his sister Lorine of Montreal, QC; sister Gilda of Burbank, CA; brother Hilmer of Riverside, CA; sister-in-law Anna of Whitemouth, MB and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Benjamin of Whitemouth and sister-in-law Lily of Riverside. Dan will also be sorely missed by all his friends. A Chartered Accountant, Dan enjoyed his 26 years of work at BC Gas (formerly Inland Natural Gas), retiring in 1999 as Vice President, Enterprise Resource Planning. He was a true sports enthusiast and a long-time member of the Arbutus Club Totems hockey team. During retirement, Dan enjoyed playing hockey and golf, spending time with family and friends, and dining at his favourite restaurants. Dan was an independent thinker who never accepted anything at face value. He will be remembered most for his generosity, his keen sense of humour and his ability to make others laugh even when the funny side was hard to find. Special thanks to Doug Horner and Norm Riverin, who were of great support to him during his illness; the VGH Palliative Care Unit for their compassionate care; Dr. Paul Klimo of Lions Gate Hospital; Dr. Graeme Duncan of the BC Cancer Agency; and the Pacific Spirit Community Health Centre for their support. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 26th at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1499 Laurier Avenue, Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Dan’s memory to KidsSport BC or the Prostate Research Foundation of Canada (www.prostatecancer.ca).
