Clare Seow Looi: A Life of Resilience, Dedication, and Love
Clare Seow Looi, wife, mother, teacher, and community member, passed away on May 2, 2024, at 89. Clare was born Seow Geok Choo on October 24, 1934, at her family home on Scotts Road, Singapore, to Pang Siew Peck and Seow Chin Guan. Her early years were a tapestry of familial love, cultural heritage, and resilience amidst historical upheavals.
Growing up in a bustling, multigenerational household, Clare experienced the ups and downs of family life. Her home was shared by the Pangs, Seows, and Chews, with up to 20 family members living together. Clare fondly recalled mischievous adventures with her brothers, sisters, and cousins. The outbreak of World War II brought turmoil, and the family's home was temporarily turned into a hospital. Despite the chaos, Clare's indomitable spirit shone through as she helped with household chores and helped her family.
Clare's education began at the Singapore Girls' School after the war, where she evinced academic aptitude. Her father, Seow Chin Guan, worked as a clerk at a Dutch company, ensuring his children had the opportunity to pursue their studies. Clare excelled, passing the Cambridge English competency exam and graduating in the early 1950s. Initially enrolled in a nursing program, she switched to the Teachers Training College at her father's insistence, beginning a career that would leave a lasting impact on many young lives.
In the mid-1950s, Clare began teaching primary school, where she met her future husband, Robert Looi. They married in November 1958. Clare and Robert had a deep love and respect for each other; they began a life journey that took them from Singapore to Canada. Their marriage was blessed with two children, and despite financial constraints, they built a loving - if strict - home.
In 1968, Clare and her family emigrated to Canada, seeking new opportunities and a fresh start. Initially settling in New Denver, BC, and later, Merritt, Clare faced the challenges of adapting to a new country and rural living with determination. She worked as a substitute teacher before securing a full-time position at Kengard Elementary in Merritt. Clare’s dedication to her students earned her the admiration of colleagues and parents alike.
Life was different from Singapore, but Clare embraced it. She built strong friendships in the community. Despite the geographical and cultural shifts, Clare's home remained a place of hospitality and warmth. Regular trips to Vancouver for shopping became family routines.
After retiring in 1994, Clare and Robert moved to Surrey, where they continued to thrive. Clare took on volunteer roles, teaching English as a second language to adults. Her passion for education and helping others never waned, reflecting her lifelong commitment to making a positive impact on those around her.
Clare was also an avid traveler, exploring China, Vietnam, Europe, and beyond with Robert. Her love of adventure and learning about different cultures enriched her life. She saw her two children marry and was blessed with grandchildren.
In 2005, Clare faced the devastating loss of Robert. Despite this, she remained resilient, supported by her children, friends, and neighbors. Clare continued to enjoy her garden and stay active in her community, embodying a spirit of grace and strength.
Clare Seow Looi leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and resilience. Her life story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of a kind heart. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
