In Loving Memory

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cecilia Cuento Ilagan, a beloved daughter, sister, and cherished friend.  Born on October 16, 1935, in Taal, Batangas, Philippines, Cecilia's journey through life was one marked by love, compassion and unwavering strength.

Cecilia's legacy is one of boundless warmth.  The daughter of Ignacio "Totoy" Ilagan, Sr., and Modesta "Tentay" Ilagan, she grew up in a nurturing household alongside her siblings, Gumersindo "Mindo" Ilagan, married to Nora, Ignacio “Tito” Ilagan, Jr., married to Purita, and Myrna Borromeo, married to Rodolfo.

Cecilia's passion for music led her to earn a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in piano, from the University of Santo Tomas.  Her dedication to this passion was a testament to her commitment to excellence.

In 1969, Cecilia embarked on a new chapter in her life by immigrating to Ontario, seeking new opportunities and experiences.   In 1978, Cecilia's journey brought her to British Columbia, where she continued to make her mark.  Her employment with Campbell Helicopters showcased her adaptability and willingness to embrace new challenges.  Her determination led her to obtain her Certified General Accountant designation, further highlighting her relentless pursuit of knowledge and growth.

A devout Christian, Cecilia's faith was a cornerstone of her life.  Her spirituality guided her actions, and she found solace and strength in her unwavering devotion.  Her strength of faith motivated her to complete numerous pilgrimages to holy sites across Europe and the Americas, a testament to her deep connection with her beliefs.

Cecilia responded to the call of Carmel in October 2004.  On September 10, 2005, after one year of discernment, she was clothed with her scapular and accepted for formation in the Discalced Carmelite Secular Order (OCDS).  She made her First Promise on October 20, 2007 and her Definitive Promise on October 16, 2010.  Shortly after, she became an extended member of the Order due to her health challenges.  While this prevented her from attending meetings, Cecilia was intent on continuing her Carmelite obligations, praying the Liturgy of the Hours and meditating daily.  Despite poor eyesight, she continued her formation by passionately reading her vast collection of books on the Carmelite Saints with the aid of a magnifying glass.

While Cecilia's journey was marked by physical and health challenges, her resilience and determination in the face of adversity inspired everyone around her. Her unwavering spirit and graceful acceptance of challenges were a testament to her indomitable will and unwavering character.

Cecilia was a beloved aunt to her nephews and nieces, Cynthia, Gino, Liza, Tereza, Noemi, Tina, Anne, Patrick and Eric.  Her love and guidance had a profound impact on their lives and her memory will forever be cherished by each of them.

As we mourn her loss, let us also celebrate the remarkable life of Cecilia - a life that exemplified love, strength and the beauty of a soul that touched the lives of so many.

Rest in peace, dear Cecilia. You will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
