It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Carole Elizabeth Davison who was taken from us unexpectedly on November 5, 2024 at Peace Arch Hospital at the age of 83. She was predeceased by her parents Elsa Viola Davison (Kramer) and John Wellington Davison and by her brother Colin.
She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband Brian as well as other surviving family members and friends both here in Canada and in the UK.
Carole graduated from Port Colborne High School commencing her studies for her medical degree at the University of Toronto shortly thereafter. On graduating from the University of Toronto in 1966 she moved to Vancouver to take up an internship at Vancouver General Hospital. Having met many British medical/nursing graduates during her internship Carole journeyed to England intending to work for a year before taking up a specialty at VGH.
That one year experience extended to a 25 year stay during which time she occupied several medical posts before finding her true vocation in Occupational Medicine. She considered herself fortunate to study under Dr. Peter Taylor, one of the foremost proponents of Occupational Medicine in the UK. She obtained a Diploma in Occupational Medicine and accreditation as a consultant in Occupational Medicine becoming a Member of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine. She worked as a Medical Officer for both the Post Office and Unilever before joining the UK Government Health and Safety Executive as an Employment Medical Advisor.
Carole moved back to Canada in 1993 bringing her wealth of experience to take up a position as Medical Advisor with the Workers’ Compensation Board of BC (now WorkSafeBC). In this role she provided advice to employers, workers, worker representatives, industrial medical staff, GPs and WorkSafeBC officers on occupational health issues as well as advice to claims adjudicators on occupational disease issues. She was also heavily involved in the medical certification of divers
Carole had a great love for music from an early age. She studied both voice and piano during her youth and took part in many festivals and competitions. This love continued throughout her life both through her participation in choirs and attendance at concerts. Her home was never without music.
In addition to her musical interest, she was an avid gardener and liked nothing better than to be outside “digging in the dirt” and moving plants into more harmonious positions. Retirement gave her the opportunity to take many extended trips to Europe where she and Brian took great delight in renting apartments and “living like locals”.
