Born in Tuguegarao, Cagayan in the Philippines, Carling graduated from the Mapua Institute of Technology with a BSc in Civil Engineering and from the University of the Philippines with an MBA. He worked for multinational construction companies and handled their projects in the Pacific Basin, Southeast Asia and throughout the Middle East. He immigrated to Canada in 1982, and lived in Toronto for twenty years prior to moving to Vancouver. He is the author of the Ibanak Basic Dictionary.
He was predeceased by his daughter Elizabeth (Vicente) in 2011. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Divinia Palomar Balao, his children Edward (Jonelle), Carlos Jr. (Marylou), Catherine, Michael (Janneth), Jennifer (John), and his grandchildren Monique, Carlo (Carina), Dana, Luigi, Jacqueline, Jonas, Gabrielle, Matthew, and Andrew.
The family would like to thank the staff of Vancouver General Hospital and in particular the Palliative Care Unit where Carlos spent his final days.
Visitations will be held Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at the Holy Name of Jesus church at 4925 Cambie Street, Vancouver, BC from 6 - 7 p.m. and from 8 - 9 p.m. Vigil prayers will be from 7 - 8 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held the following day on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the church.
