Born in Vancouver, Bill grew up in Kerrisdale with his brother Doug, sister Helen and mother Melba. (His father, James, died when Bill was 7.) In his teenage years, eager to attend a Christian boarding school, Bill hitchhiked to Auburn Adventist Academy, south of Seattle, for Grades 11 & 12. Later, after graduating from Walla Walla University with a business degree Bill built houses in New Westminster, Burnaby and Surrey. He then co-founded M & P Mercury Sales which became the largest boat dealership in western Canada. In 1958 Bill married Elaine Holdal and the couple lived in New Westminster where they raised their two children Lori and Bob.
Bill enjoyed boating, water skiing, snow skiing and hiking. In recent years he was blessed with grandchildren Emily and Ari courtesy of Bob and wife Anya. Bill had a great sense of humor, was easy going and took life’s challenges with a near-effortless stride. Bill and Elaine travelled a lot and saw many beautiful parts of the world. In 2009 Bill sold M & P to his son Bob, and both Bill and Elaine continued to work there part time until 2015.
Bill loved his church (Seventh-day Adventist) and throughout his life he encouraged many in their walk with God, making profound differences in numerous people’s lives. Recently, Bill’s health began to decline. Bill’s death was peaceful, surrounded by those he loved. He is deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Silver Hills Guest House, a health retreat which Bill helped establish in 1984 and which has helped thousands of people over the years. Bill served on the board since day one, and is remembered for his level-headed, sound financial advice. Silver Hills Guest House, 29 Squaw Valley Road, Lumby, BC V0E 2G6
