February 13, 1934 – September 21, 2013
It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Betty and Bill Fletcher. Born the same year and married for 52 years, they left us to be with God within days of each other. Missing them are daughter Patti, son Brian, relatives and many friends.
Betty Jean McLaughlin, beautiful, loyal and loving wife, mother and friend was born in Kingston, Ontario. She is predeceased by her father William McLaughlin and mother Jean McGowan from Scotland, brother Jim and sister May Conner. After moving to Vancouver in 1957, she met the handsome William at a dance and they married on July 22, 1961. Betty was a lover of the arts, taught ballet at Kerrisdale Community Centre and spent her entire career at St. Vincent's Hospital as an X-ray and Ultrasound Technician. She loved her job and had a gift for helping people, always making them feel at ease. She volunteered with the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception, enjoyed golf, entertaining and traveling with Bill, and had a wonderful sense of style.
William Fletcher, kind-hearted, generous, loving husband, father and friend was born in Stockton Heath, Warrington, England. He is predeceased by his father William Thomas Fletcher, mother Theresa Marguerite Rylance, sister Maureen Schultz (Don) and brother Jeff (Alice). Bill proudly served his country from 1952-1954 as a member of the Royal Military Police, Middle East Land Forces. After moving to Canada in 1957, he worked on construction of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, married the beautiful Betty, and then taught Math and Computer Science in the Vancouver School District for over 24 years. He was President of the Kerrisdale Lawn Bowling Club from 2003-2004 and enjoyed swimming, cycling, curling, running and walking. He would volunteer for anything, gave selflessly, and always had a big smile and wave for everyone.
Thank you to family, friends, the Finnish Home and VGH for your love and care. We will miss their laughter, beautiful smiles and gentle spirits. They remain in our hearts forever. A Mass of Christian Burial for Betty and Bill will be held on Thursday September 26th at 11:00 am at St. John the Apostle Church, 5457 Trafalgar Street, Vancouver. Donations to the Tapestry Foundation for health care or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
