With faith and courage, Ben Hume has passed away at Vancouver General Hospital.
A loving husband, father, Pa, brother, friend, uncle and mentor to many, he is already missed by the many people who loved him.
Ben was born in Vancouver in 1948 to Janet and Lorne, grew up in North Vancouver, and as an adult lived in Nova Scotia and Massachusetts. In the mid-eighties he and his family returned to BC where Ben became the owner of several manufacturing businesses. Ben volunteered in provincial politics and was the National Chair for the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters and chaired the Executive Health and Safety Council, as well as the Immigrant Employer Council of BC. He was the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee medal for his service to Canada.
In his retirement his Catholic faith deepened. He committed his time to supporting St Augustine's Parish in Kitsilano and the local coffee shops.
Ben was a self-congratulatory cook and a devotee of Kirkland brand jeans. He managed to survive his misspent youth, multiple man-colds and his sometimes questionable food safety practices. He also patiently tolerated the merciless teasing of his wife and children.
Ben loved cars, boats, kitchen gadgets, reading, whisky, a good meal and a good argument. He was known for his kindness, optimism and welcoming nature. Ben always saw the best in people and loved encouraging them to take on leadership and pursue their dreams.
A funeral mass will be held on March 8th at 1:30 pm at St. Augustine's Parish, 2028 W 7th Ave. Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you raise a glass to Ben and enjoy each other's company.
