We are grieved to announce that Shane Hennan, beloved son, father, husband, brother, uncle, "grampa" and friend, has passed away from pancreatic cancer at age 88.
Shane was born in Miami, Manitoba, the second of six children to Howard and Stella (Hoey) Hennan. He was predeceased by his first wife of 47 years, Joan (Thompson) and son Melvin and survived by his second wife, Alberta (Bonner) and his daughters, Kimberly (Steve) Azyan, Pamela (Mike) Orth and Shirley Krahn (and her children, the ("grandkids").
Shane's adventurous spirit led him to join the RCMP as soon as he was eligible to apply at age 18. Over his 25-year career in policing he was stationed across western Canada, but it was his postings in the Yukon and NWT which most suited his love of the rugged outdoors and community service.
Following his retirement, he became a successful businessman in the Abbotsford/Chilliwack area. Among his many developments and endeavors, he, and his partner (son in law) opened the first commercial Bingo Hall in BC, the "Bingo-go Emporium"!
After the death of his wife Joan in 2006, Shane moved to Pender Harbour on the Sunshine Coast where he settled down for nearly 15 years, longer than he had ever lived anywhere else. He absolutely loved both the natural beauty and the warm, welcoming community he found there. Shane married again to Alberta "Alta", a woman to whom he was briefly engaged when he was a youth. Regrettably, due to her health concerns they had to move from Pender Harbour in 2021 to Thornebridge Gardens in New Westminster. Only a year later he was diagnosed with cancer.
To the very end Shane was a true gentleman, known for his humility and kindness and fabulous smile! He will be deeply missed.
Many thanks to the attentive and respectful staff at Laurel Place Hospice, his wonderful oncologist, Dr. Janine Davies, and to all the staff that were more like friends at Thornebridge Gardens. Thanks also to his friend there, Vera, who did so much to support and comfort him through his last two years.
Family will be holding a private celebration of life on Father's Day.
