It is with great sadness that the family of Alwena Letitia Havers (née Davies) announce her passing on January 24, 2024.
Alwena (“Wendy”) was born and raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, the daughter of Cecilia and William Davies. In 1938, she and her mother and younger brother Glynn immigrated to Great Britain, specifically the region adjacent to Portsmouth and Petersfield, Hampshire. Alwena spent her adolescent years amidst harrowing wartime conditions, an experience that deeply shaped her character.
Following the end of World War II, Mom and her family returned to Canada. They lived for a brief time in Nova Scotia before returning to Saskatchewan. There they took up residence in Regina. While working as a secretary at the local YWCA, Alwena met a young geologist named Murray Hall Havers. They got married in 1955 and eventually moved to Calgary, Alberta, where they raised three children with great love and support. Alwena and Murray left Calgary in 1995 to live in the Greater Vancouver area, where they spent most of their retirement years.
Mom loved music, poetry, and travel. As a dedicated adherent of Christian Science, she faithfully served her church and worked part-time in the Reading Room for many years. Mom’s generosity was evident in the many charities to which she contributed over the years. She also richly enjoyed the company of family and friends, always inspiring affection and loyalty in anyone fortunate enough to make her acquaintance.
Alwena was predeceased by her husband Murray (2007). She is survived by her children Colin (Susan) with grandson Alexander in Calgary, Linda (Michael) with grandchildren Sam and Natasha in Calgary, and Grant (Therese) with grandchildren Maximilian, Lucia, and Charles in Langley.
The family is very grateful to the physicians and staff of the Ellen Sinclair Kennett Lodge for providing Mom with excellent care.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Kearney Columbia-Bowell Chapel (219-6th St, New Westminster, BC, V3L 3A3) on Friday, February 23, at 1pm. Reception to follow.
To honor Mom’s memory, the family invites Alwena’s friends and community to donate to a charity of their choice.
