Fr. Allan Noonan, O.M.I. was born on April 17, 1927 in Souris, P.E.I. His parents Lorne Louis Noonan and Catherine (MacDonald) raised five children Noreen, Kay Lorna and Pauline. The last surviving member of the family is Lorna Coulombe who is presently living in Ottawa.
Fr. Allan took his first vows in 1949, Perpetual vows in 1952 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1953 in Ottawa. Since then he lead an active life as an Oblate Missionary of Mary Immaculate.
His first assignment in 1954 was as Assistant Principal and Missionary working in and out of the Indian Residential School in Kamloops, B.C. In 1959 he was granted a year studies to complete his Bachelor of Education at the University of Ottawa. From 1960 -74 he was Administrator of his beloved Kamloops Indian Residential School. His next two assignments were as pastor at Sacred Heart in Whitehorse, Yukon from1974-77 and at St. Augustine’s in Vancouver from 1977 – 78. In 1978, Fr. Al went back to St. Paul’s University in Ottawa to acquire a Master of Political Science. He was then asked to take on the responsibility of being Provincial of St. Paul’s Province which he dutifully fulfilled from 1979 -86. Before getting into his final two pastoral assignments, Fr. Al was given a three month sabbatical for renewal at Vatican 11 in Menlo Park, California. Serving as pastor in at Sacred Heart, Terrace from 1986–1992 and from 1992 to 2007 at St. John Vianney in Kamloops, which Fr. Al enjoyed immensely was a most wonderful way for him to complete his fifty-four years of dedicated service.
In 2007, Fr. Allan retired at 1311 The Crescent where he enjoyed life and kept in contact with fellow Oblates, family and friends. Fr. Allan enjoyed his biking exercise riding around The Crescent on a daily basis. In May of 2011, Fr. Allan had to undergo a cancer operationat St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. Although the operation was successful, on June 11, needing more care, Fr. Allan moved to Brock Fahrni, a nursing care home. In spite of the excellent care he received, Fr. Al’s cancer claimed him and he died peacefully at Brock Fahrni on February 13, 2013 at approximately 10:30 P.M.
