CROOKS, Anne Kathleen
September 23, 1966 – February 21, 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce that Anne, known by her friends as Annabel, passed away at Royal Columbian Hospital from a massive stroke on February 21, 2018, at age 51. She was the much loved daughter of Sylvia and the late Dr. Michael Crooks. Born in Vancouver, Anne attended Kerrisdale schools and was a graduate of Simon Fraser University. She was a highly intelligent, caring and generous person with great artistic talent. She will be greatly missed by her mother Sylvia, brothers Geoff and Brian, son Clayton VanVolkenburg, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends, especially Brad Cooper. A private gathering of family and friends in Anne’s memory will be held at her family home on March 17. Online condolences may be expressed at

I remember going to McKechnie and one year at Magee with Anne. We were both crazy about art. We would also sing Christmas carols even when it wasn’t Christmas because we loved to sing the harmony. Anne had the coolest hanging chair in her room and we would obsessively listen to The Cars, Led Zeppelin, Boston and Cheap Trick. She had a wonderfully free spirit.

For one of Anne’s birthday parties we all went to see “2001: A Space Odyssey”. It must have been back in theaters for the 10th anniversary so that would have been 1978 or 1979. We were all kind of like “hugh?” but over the years I have grown to appreciate it for the classic that it is. Every time the movie comes on one of the movie channels or, in conversation, when someone makes a “Hal” reference, it triggers a reflection back to fun memories with Anne.

Even though our paths took us different directions, the special people you connect with in childhood stay hard-wired within.

My deepest condolences to family and friends for your loss.

Thank you Anne for sharing those memorable and formative years with me. Rest well my friend.

My condolences to her family for your loss.
I have only just found out and I am struggling to believe it.

Our paths took a different direction and we lost contact with each other......that being said I do know this........I will forever regret not trying to find her.

She was my Angel in waiting, a true soul sister.

Annie B I guess this is goodbye day I will see you on the other side.
